Why Coworking Is the Perfect Opportunity for Networking
There is nothing more important for businesses in today’s society than networking; regardless of the sector you’re in, whether you are part of a giant corporation or a freelancer who works from home, getting yourself out there is imperative to a thriving and successful business. As Jay Samit said, ‘Spend as much time working on your business as in your business”.
Whether it’s social media, emails or websites; advertising and networking has become almost primarily digitised. This online era makes our ability to reach anyone in the world much easier, however, it is also extremely isolating and often quite impersonal. Studies have now been done into how lone workers are more likely to suffer from emotional and health related issues as a direct result of isolation and loneliness; so how do we combat this?
Enter coworking, the new way to network that allows you to improve your business in an engaging, exciting and inspirational environment surrounded by likeminded individuals. There is nothing else like it; sure being online is great, but you can’t forge the same relationships through a screen as you can when you’re working side by side with real people.
As we have mentioned before on our blog, we strive as a company to encourage engagement and networking every day. Our spaces are relaxed and unassuming, creating the perfect breeding ground for discussion and ideas to be shared and brought to fruition.
Could Coworking Really Help You Network?
It sounds pretty crazy to think that you could improve your networking circle simply by going to work, but coworking provides just that! Imagine meeting someone from a completely new profession over a quick coffee break, or bumping into someone from the very industry you are looking to source from by the water cooler. The opportunities are endless in a coworking space.
When you step through the doors of an Areaworks’ space, you are met with dozens of experienced individuals who are all after the same things as you, success in their ventures and to make meaningful connections. The difference with a coworking space like ours is that you are removing that sense of urgency to quickly make an impression, so what’s left are real relationships being formed.
We are lucky enough to provide workspaces to a diverse group of individuals; our members can be from any walk of life, which is part of what makes us a great community! Having that opportunity to network with people who have been brought up differently, taught differently or worked in a completely different sector is invaluable. It gives you the opportunity to broaden your mind and be more open to new suggestions that you may never have otherwise considered.
Office Vs. Coworking Space?
When you consider your typical office environment, what do you think of? Whilst this may not apply to everyone, we know from first-hand accounts that the majority of offices are stuffy, high-pressured and competitive environments. You are working alongside people who are all scrambling to get to the top, making for an often-stressful environment.
For us, the coworking space is everything that an office isn’t. Areaworks prides itself on the clean open spaces, greenery, vibrant pops of colour and workspaces designed to bring people together, to create communities. There is an instant easy-going atmosphere in our coworking spaces, not least because everyone is working on their own projects but also because there is a much larger sense of independence and autonomy that is hard to capture in a 9-5 office.
When the competitive element is removed, individuals feel much more open to sharing ideas, helping each other and a have a genuine interest in what other people’s businesses are all about.
Community & Networking
With such a rise in freelancers and entrepreneurs it can be hard to make a name for yourself, especially if you’re brand new to the game. When we consider the typical corporate event designed to network, the first thing we think of is time restrictions and pressures to meet everyone in the room and make a lasting impression. These events can be great, but you’re much less likely to make any real connections. With that said we try to encourage individuals who work from one of our coworking spaces to take as much from their experience as possible.
We understand that there will be plenty of days where you simply want to find a quiet nook and crack on with work – which is great and we provide ample places where you can do that. But part of the success surrounding coworking spaces like ours is the community within the four walls.
What other environment offers a diverse group of professionals all with their own skill-sets, backgrounds and ideas, all under the same roof?
There’s no better way to improve your sales pitch than to introduce yourself in a relaxed environment, where you can let people know what it is you do. Ultimately everyone is in the same boat and wanting to impress others, so over time your elevator pitch will be perfected and you won’t even have to try hard to get there!
We’re extremely passionate about helping our members network, so much so that along with our two London based work spaces, we also have a sister spot in Shanghai, Fitspace! Creating these connections with others encourages both brands to grow and allows our members to work and collaborate all over the world. Our aim is to collaborate in a similar way with more coworking spaces in other countries to extend our reach and provide even more for those who use our spaces.
How to Go About Networking?
Getting yourself settled in a new coworking space is the first step towards networking, but it can be quite daunting getting yourself out there! Luckily, we are experts in this area, and provide the following tips for all of our members to consider:
- Be open and approachable; remember everyone is nervous; but meeting new people does get easier! A friendly open smile, a kind gesture, or simply a warm introduction will quickly melt the ice.
- Location; ensure you get around. One of the best aspects of our space is that it offers a range of working areas, and places to unwind with a brew. Make the most of all these spaces to you can make connections more easily.
- Social Butterfly: Most coworking spaces hold events; Areaworks hosts a variety of these to promote our members getting together inside and outside of work. These are great times to meet new people.
- Reciprocate; the key thing about networking is to reciprocate. Don’t just take, but also give, share knowledge and information. Relationships that are two-sided are much more likely to thrive.
- Keep on top of new members; if you have been in your coworking space for a while, you may know everybody by now, but keeping an eye out for new members who you can introduce yourself too is important. It not only welcomes them in to the place, but also allows you to forge yet another new connection.
