Friends of Areaworks: Sam
We’re proud to be different to other coworking spaces. One of the statements that Areaworks is built on is ‘an open environment to feed your imagination.’
For the second installment of our ‘Friends of Areaworks’ feature, we sat down to have a coffee and chat with the festival fanatic and travel-mad videographer and photographer- Sam, who captured the brilliant moments we had from our Manor House grand opening event last March.
Sam, spent most of his childhood in the beautiful country of New Zealand. It was here around the age of nine that Sam started making personal films; a hobby that soon grew into a passion. Whilst studying for his A-levels, he was given a £150 bursary which he used to purchase a digital single lens reflex camera. Armed with his new bit of kit, Sam tried to shoot a music gig. Having been denied entry he found the band manager’s number online and unbelievably blagged his way into the press pit.
This opened his eyes to shooting live music and he’s been bombarding band managers and festival organizers ever since to build up his portfolio and perfect his skills.
Sam’s approach to his work is very fluid. Amazingly, most of his work has come about from chance or brief encounters with people; using this one crazy trip he made to the wilds of Vancouver as a perfect example. He travelled there to meet with a guy he had only previously met twice to make a short film.
Sam says that inspiration for his work comes from anyone and anything. He has been inspired to take photos and make films by people he has met whilst travelling. He is also influenced by fellow videographers and photographers, like American, James Marcus Haney who started his career by sneaking into festivals and Californian native Adam Elmakais who has photographed music artists like Jared Leto.
As for what the future holds for Sam, he himself says he doesn’t know. But one thing he is most certain of is to continue working on projects that he finds interesting and to be able to turn this passion into a long-term career.
Sam says, “He feels at home at Areaworks as it is easy-going and open, just like myself!” He then went on to say that this openness extends to the people there – like our Community Manager, Emma, who takes time to personally get to know everyone who uses the space.
