Immersing ourselves into our communities is very important to us here at Areaworks. Just a stone’s throw away from our Hackney branch up Kingsland Road are the lovely people at The Dictionary Hostel. Nestled in busteling Shoreditch, we have teamed up with The Dictionary Hostel to give our members some amazing discounts. We sat down with the Marketing Manager, Nicola, to hear more about how the Dictionary Hostel came to be.
A bit about you, what’s your background?
The Dictionary Hostel opened in 2012 by female entrepreneur Eliska Finlay. Eliska has worked in the hostel industry for many years and wanted to branch out on her own and build a vibrant and friendly hostel in central London. She loved the creative spirit that Shoreditch embraces, and wanted to offer those on a budget the opportunity to stay central and explore some of London’s most talked about restaurants, exhibitions, art galleries, bars and clubs.
Why did you decide to open?
Prior to 2012, there weren’t any hostels in Shoreditch and Eliska could see a gap in the market and an exciting business opportunity. The purpose of the venture was simple; to provide stylish and affordable accommodation for those on a budget who wanted to stay in central London.
What’s been your biggest challenge so far?
Our biggest challenge to date has been maintaining our online position. Finding a balance between the OTA (online travel agents) sales and our own online direct sales has been challenging, but we continue to meet this balance by building upon our relationship with our OTA’s, ensure we are active on social media and that our website is informative, easy to use and mobile,
What’s been the highlight so far?
We are passionate about travel and believe seeing the world is a gift that helps us grow and allows us to discover unknown parts of ourselves; that we are all responsible for this amazing planet we live on. So our biggest highlight has been being able to give those travelling for fun, business or seeing friends, the opportunity to stay in one of the greatest and most exciting cities in the world, whilst on a budget. We love that we are a part of those unforgettable memories and in some small way, part of people’s life-changing journeys.
What are your plans for the future?
Now that we are a well established presence in Shoreditch we believe it’s time to expand our brand and open another hostel in Europe. We are in the research phase, but watch this space for exciting new developments!
Describe your venue, what are your USPs?
Our venue is a converted East End warehouse which we completely renovated whilst leaving enough exposed brick to ensure that we kept the character of the building! We then added our own personal touches to include a swing in one of the dorms, artwork strewn across the building, a stylish and funky adjoining bar and a roof terrace which is only accessible by ladder!
We have approximately 200 beds, various sized dorms ranging from 4 bed to 16 bed and double rooms for those who desire a little more privacy. We provide free Wi-fi and breakfast, excellent customer service and lots of open social space to work, meet new people or just hangout.
Our biggest USP is our location. We are a short walk from tube stations, main line stations and an Uber ride away from City Airport. We are strolling distance from some of London’s best bars, clubs, restaurants, vintage & flower markets and exhibitions. Famous event spaces such as the Truman Brewery and the Silicon Roundabout are on our doorstep, plus we are surrounded by some of London’s most exciting up and coming artists and entrepreneurs. Shoreditch is a hive of creative activity, it’s vibrant, full of potential and an exciting place to be. We are just so proud to be a part of it!
We are constantly growing our Areaworks family as we continue to get involved in the local community and bring more to our members. To read more about our other ‘Friends of Areaworks’ please check out our previous blog posts with Brindisa and Sin Gusano.
