There is no better place to live and work than in London. Inner London may only be 123 sq. miles, not really a massive place; but it is bursting with history, architecture, innovation, culture and green spaces. It’s no surprise then why we love London so much. And we’re not the only ones!
London is actually one of the most Instagrammed cities in the world, and one area that attracts a lot of Instagrammers is Hackney. A vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Hackney, East London, Hackney is also the site for our next Areaworks coworking space.
When we first visited Hackney, we knew we had to open a space here. Hackney is at the heart of London’s art scene and has a strong reputation for supporting local artists. This ethos matches what Areaworks is all about. We’re all about giving local communities a platform to express their ideas and grow in an open, supportive environment.
Hackney is also a place where art doesn’t hang on walls, it’s painted on the walls.
One of the things we love about Hackney is its’ array of artists. In fact, our new space is surrounded by amazing pieces of visual art. We want to share this with you so we’ve put together our favourite ways to take in the amazing sites of Hackney’s unique street art.
The Hundred Years Gallery was founded in 2011, as a non-profit art space that supports local artists as well as showcasing experimental and innovative art installations. The gallery was set up by Montse Gallego who actually has a strong connection to Hackney. Montse previously owned a café / social space in this neighbourhood.
The Hundred Years Gallery is situated on the York Row Council Estate which is next door to the Geffrye Museum and Hackney Overground Station.
The gallery has a jammed packed schedule of events so there is always something on that will satisfy all tastes. The gallery also has a close relationship with Hackney’s local community and in our view, this is the place to go if you want to see some of the amazing art that are created by Hackney’s up-and-coming artists.
As the weather is getting better (we hope to see no more snow soon) there is no better way to take in the sites, sounds and smells of Hackney than with a walking art tour. Plus, you’ll be getting fit without you even knowing it! It’s a win, win situation.
You can choose to take part in a guided tour, or you can do it on your own. We think – doing it on your own is the best option. It gives you the opportunity to go off route and explore the area at your own pace.
It seems that every corner you turn to in Hackney, there is an amazing piece of street art. If you’re limited for time, then head out to these must-visit streets:
The beauty of street art is that it is constantly changing. So, even if you’ve been before, you’re bound to see something new the next time you visit.
Just talking about Hackney is making us so excited and we can’t wait to move in! While we wait for your space to be spruced up, the next time you’re in Hackney, upload a snap of your favourite piece of Hackney street art to Instagram and tag us in using #Areaworks.
