Overcoming the Barrier to Exercise Success

As the summer months are looming, and everyone is in a scramble to get bikini ready, we are here to give you your monthly dose of exercise inspiration.

As of late, it has become apparent that more and more people are increasing their exercise levels for a variety of reasons. However time and time again, the main excuse used when trying to justify minimal to no exercise is…WORK! Time restrictions, depleted energy levels, and a lack of motivation after a long hard day are all factors in why ‘work’ has become the largest barrier to exercise. At Areaworks we are huge fans of maintaining a work-life balance and this is something we promote at our coworking spaces. This month, we have drafted in Calvin Francis from the Gym Group to help break through the biggest barrier to exercise!

Let us use office workers as an example. They work so hard every day, fighting to meet deadlines that before they know it, 6 hours have passed and they have been stuck in the same position having not moved from their desk! This stagnant position is doing nothing but harming their back and increasing their chances of postural damage.

What is the solution? Lunchtime of course! Chose an activity that fits into your available time and fitness level, from something low impact like a fast walk or light jog through the park, all the way down to a full HIIT workout or heavy weights session – there is no excuse not to make the most of your lunch break. The addition of a lunch break activity everyday, could be the key to kick-starting your fitness journey, (or at least ensuring you are maintaining the minimum amount of exercise recommended for any individual)!

Exercise brings a huge host of benefits, and below we have outlined some of the key reasons why you should try your best to fit some exercise into your day:

  • Weight control
  • Combat health conditions and diseases
  • Improved moods
  • Boost your energy
  • Exercise promotes better sleep
  • Improved mental ability
  • Exercise is FUN… And can be very sociable.

I challenge everyone to increase their current activity levels – aiming to get a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise in 4-5 days per week.
