The Sounds of Hoxton

We’re just weeks away from opening our newest coworking space in Hoxton. In the midst of pondering over light fittings and chairs, flooring and woodworks, we took a breather and escaped the madness, so that we could experience exactly what makes this area the buzzing, vibrant, and cultural hub it is famous for.

It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that there are so many venues that offer live music, given that Hoxton has a long history of championing artists, particularly musicians. Situated at 130 Hoxton Street, in the heart of Hoxton – is Hoxton Hall. Built in 1863 as a music hall, this grand theatre played host to some of the best music hall performers of its’ time. Over the years, it’s been used for different things, even as a place of worship. Today, the impressive Grade II listed building is a community centre and performance space. It regularly hosts local events and is proud to showcase some of London’s up-and-coming bands and performers.

Nowadays, music can be accessed anywhere and at any time, by plugging into our phones or devices. But nothing compares to the sound of music when it is listened to live; the purity of the sound and the energy from the crowd are sensations we can’t get from listening to music on our headphones (even if they’re the latest ones!). So, the next time you’re in the area and are looking for somewhere (other than Hoxton Hall) to listen to live music, here’s two of our favourite places:

Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen
24 Hoxton Square

One of the originals of the music scene in Hoxton, the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, is an eclectic music space that also does some mean chicken wings. It is here where some of the best live performers played in the early stages of their careers; like Florence & The Machine, Mumford & Sons, and Savages. More recently, Stormzy and Paloma Faith have also graced the stage.

On Saturday 12th May, it will be taking part in The CloseUp Festival. The one-day-only festival will be showcasing the finest emerging indie and electronic talent. We’ve been told that last year’s event was amazing, so mark your calendars and head there early so you can be sure to grab a front row seat!

Zigfrid Von Underbelly
11 Hoxton Square

Ziggy’s as it is lovingly referred to, is one of the best late-night DJ and party places in London. Open seven days a week, until past the witching hours, this venue offers both a restaurant and a live music lounge.

It was the stuff of legend that Zigfrid wanted to escape from his family’s business and was fascinated by the underground punk scene that was forming in Berlin during the 1950’s. In the 1990’s he came to England and created Ziggy’s, a space for artists and free-thinkers, and where all-around cool blokes can just let their hair down and enjoy.

How much of this is true, we don’t know, but it sure makes for a good story!

You’ll find lots of local independent DJ’s and international artists playing in the vibrant two-story space. A true Shoreditch original, they’ve got something going on most nights, and we have to recommend the food – they do an awesome grill and pizza!
