Summer is in full swing, and so is Areaworks. As part of our commitment to championing local businesses, we caught up with Areaworks member, branding genius, writer and overall nice bloke (his words!), Rich Haylock.
Having spent 10 years working in the creative arena of branding, Rich came to realise he had fallen out of love with what he was doing. So, he decided to take the plunge from a well-paid job into the uncertain waters of freelancing. But as Rich says, “I like the freedom and variety of freelancing and the feeling that you’re not lining anyone else’s pockets.”
Anyone with experience of freelancing knows that getting a business going takes lots of hard work, determination and self-belief. Plus, pestering your friends and colleagues to give you work. Paid work, ideally!
As a writer, Rich creates a variety of output. He is currently working on some articles and social posts for a big German commercial vehicle company, a website for a London-based design agency, client proposals for a Virtual Reality specialist, insight pieces for an accountancy practice for creatives… and articles for some coworking company… err, Areaworks or something.
Outside of work, Rich is a busy man. He’s released two EPs in the last 18 months under his musical moniker ‘Le Lendemain’, and hopes to continue at the rate of one a year. “Available via your preferred streaming service”, we’re reliably informed. He loves watching sport, playing tennis, reading music biographies and watching music documentaries, and he’s currently borderline-obsessed with the bands Spain and Hand Habits. He’s not watching Love Island, and any rumours you hear to the contrary are entirely unfounded.
He also became a proud father when his daughter was born in February. In the six months she’s been in the world, she’s already taken over his flat. So working (and recording) from home have become near-impossible.
This is one of the reasons he joined Areaworks. Trying to work around a baby is not the easiest of things. Plus, after four years of mainly working from home, insanity started to set in and Rich needed somewhere away from home to work. Rich says that he chose Areaworks as “it’s local to where I live, but not too close – and I like the layout, location, people – and the price”.
Rich told us that when you start your own business, you count every penny. And while this means you don’t eat out nearly as often, it presents the opportunity to become a rather handy cook. Which he has embraced. Career-wise, Rich muses that over the next few years ”I’d like to grow my portfolio even further, work with some renowned London agencies, and get to the point where I can comfortably support myself and my family.”
You can find out more about Rich and his work experience on his website: www.richwrites.co.uk. Home for his musical endeavours is www.lelendemain.co.uk. You can also read a couple of his Areaworks articles here and here!
Or head down to Areaworks, to meet the man himself. You’ll probably find him, head down, typing away, creating a fabulous article for us.
Or watching an 80s skateboarding documentary on YouTube.
