Spotlight – Zebra

It has been a busy few months here at Areaworks. We opened our second space in Hoxton this summer, which offers a welcoming and comfortable coworking community space for freelancers, startups and digital nomads alike, all from the surrounding area.

Our third coworking space in Colindale, North-West London is under construction as we speak. We can’t wait to welcome new members from the area to the Areaworks family.

We’ve achieved so much this year, and so have our members. As part of our Areaworks Spotlight series, we chatted with Areaworks member, Sophie, aka Zebra.

Zebra doesn’t like to describe herself as a digital nomad, instead, she describes herself as someone who is happy to be “homeless and officeless.” Wanting to work flexibly, she got a job offer she couldn’t refuse and for the last three years, Zebra has been working as a full-time 2d game artist and animator whilst travelling the world.

Zebra enjoys not having a conventional office. All she needs is a laptop and WiFi. Her office has been everything from a toilet to a departure lounge in Taipei airport, to lots of cafes and hostels, and even a temple!

She puts down roots in London each summer and somehow at the end of this summer she finds herself not wanting to leave. Who knows how long this feeling will last though. Zebra says that “I may wake up one morning and have the urge to go exploring.”

Working a 40-hour week whilst being a solo female traveller can certainly be a challenge, but Zebra has got multi-tasking down to a fine art. She has mastered the art of making anywhere her ‘office’, whether that’s sitting on a beach or in a roadside café.

Zebra is currently working on a top-secret project which she can’t share details of, but it involves designing cool characters, which she describes as her “digital children”. We can’t deny, we’re very excited to see the finished product.

Surprisingly, Zebra doesn’t associate her biggest achievement with her work, instead, she sees it as being able to influence others to follow their dreams and live the ‘wanderer’ lifestyle. Getting messages from people to say “Thanks, I needed that, you’ve inspired me to try harder and chase my dreams” gives Zebra the biggest buzz.

Before deciding to become an artist, Zebra studied Physics and Computer Science and likes to relax by watching documentaries on quantum physics, as well as other things like history, medicine, and psychology. When she has filled herself on YouTube documentaries, Zebra is a compulsive walker, averaging seven miles a day. Putting us to shame – we don’t know where she finds the energy!

Zebra puts her success down to hard work and a drive to prove people wrong, the ones who questioned her when she said she wanted to work remotely. For anyone who is starting out, Zebra has a simple but powerful piece of advice “Don’t be so afraid, it’s less scary than it looks.” And we agree with her 100%.

Zebra, like many others, finds it difficult to work from home, as she feels it blurs the lines between homelife and work. She said she decided to join Areaworks as it’s “close to where I live so I don’t have to face the morning crush on the tube” and “it has a beautiful modern design, high ceilings, a friendly atmosphere and comfortable workstations”. Overall, “it’s awesome.” What a review!
